Gender and Age: Causes of Social Rejection to High-Functioning Autisti

Introduction Temple Grandin is a biopic that shows how a young, autistic woman becomes a world famous expert in animal husbandry by overcoming limitation from her disease. In the movie, Temple is always the target of bully in school; however, some people react more aggressively than others. My second research is based on this movie will concern factors that motivate teenagers to socially reject and discriminate against autistic people at school. In this paper, I will observe the way in which gender and age change people's reactions to autistic people and cause any kind of bullying to the disabled. The present study will apply a qualitative method to analyze the words used by the bully in the film that show social rejection to autistic student. It is expected that social rejection will be affected by gender and age, and the attitude would be more positive from women and older young people. Research Question Research question: Do gender and age cause young people to socially reject people with high-functioning autism at school in early 20th century? The primary goal of this essay is to analyze the way in which gender and age vary young people's attitudes to high-functioning autistic people, as well as the way in which these variables lead to discrimination against autistic students. This study is relevant because knowing the connection between the variables and social rejection may avoid future autistic students being victimized at public school. Operationalization In Temple Grandin, different genders react differently to the main character, a high-functioning autistic girl. It is hypothesized that male is more aggressive and is inclined to physically bully the autistic student. Based on the assumption, I observed the insulting wor... ...ute to discrimination against autistic students. By using qualitative methodology, this paper analyzes specific lines of dialogue and behaviour and finally proves gender to be a major influence on people's decision. Yet, due to the limitation of the film, not enough data has been collected to identify age as a factor of social rejection among young people. Overall, this paper proves that gender is an important factor to the level of social rejection, whereas, further study is need to determine whether age is another influence on young people's decision about bullying and social rejection. Best Day Ever Essay

â€Å"Brandon, I just don’t think it’s wise of you to take your car your freshman year of college,† my mother said every time we passed a state. My mom and I had been taking turns driving a car my father bought me in Texas back to Georgia. . Although I would have loved to spend my Saturday with friends back at home, driving my new car from Texas to Georgia on a Saturday wasn’t that bad. I was just so determined to show off my brand new silver 2010 Toyota Camry LE, I didn’t care what anyone said because that car was coming with me to Valdosta State University fall of 2012. I woke up on Sunday anxious to drive my car to church and show it off to all my friends. I was still a bit tired from the night before, after driving all day and downloading tons of songs to add to my playlist that was entitled â€Å"Toyota Tunes†. â€Å"Brandon, while you’re in church, I want you to pray and ask God what you think you should do with your car,† my mother said towards my closed door while I was getting dressed. â€Å"Okay, Mom, but my mind is pretty much made up,† I replied instantly. After I finished getting dressing, I waited for my mother in my car to finish getting dressed in the house. Being behind the wheel of your first car is one of those capturing moments many people get to feel at least once in their life. All I could think about while awaiting my mother’s arrival was all the friends I’d have in college with my cool car. I had visions of girls way out of my league not liking me for who I was, but for what I drove. An d for the funniest reason, I was content with that. As I pulled out of the driveway, my heart began to race and my fingers started to sweat from the grip I had on my steering wheel. Nothing had ever felt so sweet than to watch my neighbors look at me after getting their Sunday paper and see whose car it was I was driving. â€Å"I want you to say the morning prayer in your new car,† my mom said after turning down the gospel music she had blasting through my speakers. The morning prayer was something my mother and I would do whenever she would drop me off at school or another morning activity. It was also our way of airing out any dirty laundry we had with each other by saying our problems aloud to God and whoever else was around to listen. â€Å"Alright mom, I’ll pray. Dear Heavenly Father, I come before you today asking for your protection through these highways and streets. I also pray that you can give my mother an ease of mind and let her know that I will be safe my freshman year with my car. She should have nothing to worry about because she should believe that You will protect me every mile I drive no matter where I drive. If she doesn’t believe that, then maybe that’s something You and her should discuss. In Jesus’ name, Amen.† â€Å"Amen,† she said in an unpleasant manner. â€Å"Disobeying your mother is not of God, Brandon†, she said when we pulled up to the church â€Å", But this is your car and you’re a grown man. Just don’t be surprised if God gives you a sign telling you that you should listen to me on this one. After church, I told my mom that I would take her home, pick up some friends and hang out at one of my good friends’ house for a bit. â€Å"How long will you be out? Because you leave for school in three days and there are still a lot of things you need to do before you go.† â€Å"I’ll be back by ten, I promise,† I said as I grabbed my keys off the counter to get my friends. This would now be my official first time driving my car alone. This was the moment I’ve been awaiting since my father first told me he bought a car for me fresh off the lot in cash. My mother waived at me from the window shaking her head. You ever get that feeling that something is about to happen, but you don’t know what it is. With a very strange gut feeling beginning to occur, I waived back to my mom while wiping the sweat off my hand â€Å"Bittersweet Symphony† by The Verve was my first song of choice. The song is actually about 6 minutes, which is about as lon g as it took for me to get to my friend Marquell’s house. â€Å"Come outside. I’m right around the corner,† I told him over the phone, not mentioning my new car. When he came outside, the look on his face was priceless. â€Å"So this was the ‘little something’ your dad got you for graduation!?† The minute he climbed into the passenger seat, he instantly turned my radio to his Sunday easy listening channel he would always turn to in his beat up Camero. On our way to my friend Diamond’s house, she called me and asked if we could pick up some snacks for the movie we were going to watch when we got to her house. On my way to the store with my friend Marquell, we had the most intellectual conversation on which television shows expanded our minds the most when we were children. â€Å"I don’t care what you say†, Marquell said with confidence,† If it wasn’t for Captain Planet, I wouldn’t be the eco-friendly man I am today. Maybe if you watched more Captain Planet and less He y Arthur, you wouldn’t have all these air fresheners in your car polluting the Earth.† We both took a little time to acknowledge all the Hawaiian Breeze air cleansers I had dangling from my rear-view mirror, as we were approaching a stop light. â€Å"But you can’t tell me my ride doesn’t smell like pineapples and happiness though,† I said to cut the lighthearted tension me and my best friend created. As we pulled into the front of the gas station to get snacks, an old lady behind me honked her horn, attempting to tell me to clear the tail of my car into the parking space so she could get passed. The minute I tapped on the gas pedal, little did I know that my entire outlook on life would change. That was that moment that I got that explanation for that gut feeling. My car had gone into an instant throttle, running clear into the curb in front of me. â€Å"Oh shit, bruh,† my friend Marquell said in disbelief,† I think you fucked something up.† We stared at each other for a moment, not believing the careless mistake I made. The collision happened on the passenger side, so when Marquell got out the car, he was the first one to see the impact damage. When he jumped out the car and looked at my bumper, the face he made at the damage superseded the face he made when he saw my car the first time. â€Å"Tell me it’s not that bad please!† I said at the top of my lungs. I could tell it was already bad by seeing pink fluid running underneath my car when I got out. I honestly don’t think there is enough paper in the world to write the words of unhappiness that flowed from my mouth like an eruption of every foul term I could fathom There was a huge fracture in the middle of the bumper which effected the brake fluid tank to rip open. This also affected the radiator tank, as well. The first person I called was my father to let him know what happened. After that, I called the mechanic he connected me with. The last call I had to make was to my mother, to ask her to come pick me and my friend, Marquell up. This phone call was even harder to make than to my father. The phone only rang once followed by my mother’s voice saying in a subtle tone, â€Å" Before you say anything, know that I told you so before you left†¦Ã¢â‚¬

Are Literature and Fiction the Same

How do fiction and literature differ? Literature is a broader category of creative expression that includes both fiction and nonfiction. In that light, fiction should be thought of as a type of literature. Literature Literature is a term that describes both written and spoken works. Broadly speaking, it designates  anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to superior  creative works of the imagination, including poetry, drama, and fiction, as well as nonfiction and in some cases song. For many, the word literature suggests a higher art form; merely putting words on a page doesnt necessarily mean creating literature. Works of literature, at their best, provide a kind of blueprint of human civilization. From the writing of ancient civilizations like that of Egypt  and China, and the Greeks philosophy, poetry, and drama to the plays of Shakespeare, the novels of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, and the poetry of Maya Angelou, works of literature give insight and context to all the worlds societies. In this way, literature is more than just a historical or cultural artifact; it can serve as an introduction to a new world of experience. Fiction The term fiction indicates  written work that is invented by the imagination, such as novels, short stories, plays, and poems. This contrasts with nonfiction, fact-based work including essays, memoirs, biographies, histories, journalism, and other works that are factual in scope. Spoken works such as the epic poems of Homer and Medieval poets handed down by word of mouth, when writing them down was not possible or practical, are also considered a type of literature. Sometimes songs, like the courtly love songs conceived by the French and Italian troubadour  lyric poets and poet musicians of the Middle Ages, which are fictional (even if they were inspired by fact), are considered literature. Fiction and Nonfiction Are Types of Literature The term literature is a rubric, an overarching ensemble that encompasses both fiction and nonfiction. So a work of fiction is a work of literature, just as a work of nonfiction is a work of literature.  Literature is  a broad and sometimes changeable designation, and critics may argue about which works deserve to be called literature. Sometimes, a work not considered weighty enough to be considered literature at the time it was published may, years later, acquire that designation.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Characters Huck and Jim - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 978 Downloads: 7 Date added: 2019/05/18 Category Literature Essay Level High school Tags: Huckleberry Finn Essay Mark Twain Essay Did you like this example? The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) by Mark twain, one of the greatest American authors of all time and a humorist, was set in the town of St. Petersburg, Missouri. Not to mention that Twain was born in Florida, a small village in Missouri, through this novel he directly attacked the traditions of the south held during the time. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: Characters Huck and Jim" essay for you Create order The Huckleberry Finn starts with familiarizing us with events of the novel that preceded it i.e. The Adventure of Tom sawyer. At the end of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, a poor boy with a drunken bum for a father, and his friend Tom Sawyer, a middle-class boy with an imagination too active for his own good, found a robbers stash of gold. As a result of his adventure, Huck gained quite a bit of money, which Judge Thatcher held for him in trust. Huck was adopted by the Widow Douglas, a kind but stifling woman who lives with her sister, the self-righteous Miss Watson. However, Huck being dissatisfied with his new civilized life of church and school tries to run away but his friend Tom convinces him to stay put so that he could join Toms new robbers gang along with the other local boys. Everything was going perfect in Hucks life until his drunkard father Pap reappears and demands his custody and the money. The Judge thatcher and the Widow try to gain court custody of Huck, but a new judge in town refuses to separate Huck from his father. Pap steals Huck away from the Widows house and takes him to a log cabin. At first Huck enjoys the cabin life, but after receiving frequent beatings, he decides to escape. When Pap goes into town, Huck seizes the opportunity. He seeks his way out of the log cabin, kills a pig, spreads the blood as if it were his own, takes a canoe, and floats downstream to Jacksons Island. There he met Miss Watsons runaway slave Jim. Huck and Jim soon learn that men are coming to search Jacksons Island, and the two fugitives escape down the river on a raft. Jims plan is to reach the Illinois town of Cairo, and from there, he can take the Ohio River up to the free states. The plan troubles Huck and his conscience. However, Huck continues to stay with Jim as they travel, despite his belief that he is breaking all of society and religions tenets. Hucks struggle with the concept of slavery and Jims freedom continues throughout the novel. Huck and Jim encounter several characters during their flight, including a band of robbers aboard a wrecked steamboat and two Southern genteel families who are involved in a bloody feud. The only time that Huck and Jim feel that they are truly free is when they are aboard the raft. This freedom and tranquility are shattered by the arrival of the duke and the king, who commandeer the raft and force Huck and Jim to stop at various river towns in order to perform confidence scams on the inhabitants. The scams are harmless until the duke and the king pose as English brothers and plot to steal a familys entire inheritance. Before the duke and the king can complete their plan, the real brothers arrive. In the subsequent confusion, Huck and Jim escape and are soon joined by the duke and the king. Disappointed at their lack of income, the duke and the king betray Huck and Jim, and sell Jim back into slavery. When Huck goes to find Jim, he discovers that Jim is being held captive on Silas and Sally Phelps farm. The Phelps think Huck is their visiting nephew, Tom Sawyer, and Huck easily falls into the role of Tom. Tom Sawyer soon arrives and, after Huck explains Jims captivity, Tom takes on the guise of his own brother, Sid. After dismissing Hucks practical method of escape, Tom suggests they invent an elaborate plan to free Jim. Toms plan is haphazardly based on several of the prison and adventure novels he has read, and the simple act of freeing Jim becomes a complicated circus with rope ladders, snakes, and mysterious messages. When the escape finally takes place, a pursuing farmer shoots Tom in the calf. Because Jim will not leave the injured Tom, Jim is again recaptured and taken back to the Phelps farm. At the farm, Tom reveals the entire scheme to Aunt Sally and Uncle Silas. Readers learn that Miss Watson has passed away and freed Jim in her will, and Tom has been aware of Jims freedom the entire time. At the end of the novel, Jim is finally set free and Huck ponders his next adventure away from civilization. The entire novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is written in the first person and narrated by Huckleberry Huck Finn. Twain uses dialect English throughout the novel which helped to create Hucks Characterization. I also think that it gave the novel an authentic, period feel and helped to create a sense of place as well. I thought the characterization was very good in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Huck is very real throughout the novel. The other main character is Jim, a black slave Huck escapes his father and goes on the run. Jims characterization comes through Hucks eyes and I think Twain did a really good job to put it together. There has been critics about the novel such as Twain use of the Nigger and Jim being characterized as a comic clown. I completely disagree with this criticism. Since The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn was written in 1844 and was set between the time period before that the use of the word nigger to describe slaves like Jim is probably quite realisti c. Huck is no great thinker and is a bit simple. His impression of Jim is realistic.

I Attended Western Kentucky University s Symphony Concert

I attended Western Kentucky University s symphony concert. It was on Friday, October 30th at 7:30pm. It was held in Van Meter Hall. Their event was named â€Å"It s time for a treat.† The symphony was conducted by Dr. Brain St. John. Before it began, I read over the program that was handed out to find out basic information. The history of the pieces helped in understanding them. The concert featured many well-known works by famous composers such as Camille Saint-Saens, Modest Mussorgsky, and Berlioz. The three pieces that are the most memorable in my mind are â€Å"Overture to La Cenerentola†, â€Å"Là   ci darem la mano†, and March to the Scaffold from Symphonie Fantastique. Beginning with the first piece called â€Å"Overture to La Cenerentola† composed by Gioachino Rossini in 1817. It was part of the Rossini s version of the opera, Cinderella. An overture is used to capture the audience s attention. It informs the audience the concert is about to beg in. This piece is still a good selection for an overture. The contrasting soft and loud pitches made a good way to get the audience s attention. Also the brass section became a vital piece towards the end with the intense The increasing and decreasing tempo seemed like a good warning that the main event was about to begin. I really enjoyed this music. I felt like it was light because of how the strings and woodwinds interacted. This helped the mood in the room go from somber to upbeat. â€Å"Là   ci darem la mano† by Wolfgang Mozart was myShow MoreRelatedLangston Hughes Research Paper25309 Words   |  102 Pagesmarried Charles Langston, the son of a white plantation owner and a slave. Where Did She Put My Keys free essay sample

Behind my bookshelf? Under my bed? In my book bag? In my closet? Where in the world did that woman put my d*** keys? I would usually go on for about an hour like this every single time my girlfriend would get upset with me. Steadfast and arrogant, I would never ask her where she had put them. This was her way to show me I was not perfect and I did not know everything. We had been in a relationship for over two years but had been in each others’ eyes for at least triple that amount of time. I will be the first to admit I was not the best boyfriend in the world but I would do my best. In return for all my faults, she would do little annoying things like misplace my keys or, even worse, hiding my cell phone. Sooner or later, I would break my streak of egoism, admit defeat, and ask her where she had hidden it. We will write a custom essay sample on Where Did She Put My Keys? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The object of mystery would always be hidden in an obvious place which I overlooked. Even though my friends mocked me for putting up with her and her high maintenance attitude, it did not bother me much until the day I â€Å"grew up.† For me this experience was equivalent to the day a fifteen-year-old plantation boy in the 1860s was given a rifle and told to go kill some Yankees. But in my case my rifle was armed with harsh, mature words and my target was my girlfriend’s annoying behavior. The next time she hid my keys, I did not bother looking for them. I had grown up and was no longer going to participate in childish games. I told her to stop acting like such a kid and grow up if she ever wanted to speak to me again. The night after I had informed her of my â€Å"profound awakening,† I found myself counting the endless number of dots on the ceiling in the waiting room of INOVA Hospital. It was the only thing I could do to distract myself from the devastating cries of my girlfriend’s parents. Her younger sister was there as well, weeping and asking herself what the last thing she had said to her sister was. I did not have to ask myself the same question. I knew the answer. Instead of enjoyin g my last moments with her and letting her know how much I loved her, I was too busy trying to transform myself into an adult. I wish someone had told me those were going to be the last moments I would ever get to spend with her. I wish someone had told me it was all right to be a kid and play silly games sometimes. I wish I did not have to go through such a horrific event to learn this lesson. Mostly, I just wish she were still here with me. While I was anxiously sitting in the waiting room, I realized something I would never forget. It has haunted me for years and I do not believe I will ever forgive myself. I realized in that eerie period of time that I was lashing out at my girlfriend because I was afraid. I was terrified with the fact that our relationship did not mean anything to most people; they blew us off as another short-lived high school couple. I wanted to show the world that we were different, we were mature for our age and we were ready to spend the rest of our lives together. Unfortunately, life did not give us that chance. For me there are sometimes thoughts about what could have happened if she were still here. Would we still be together or would we have gone our separate way after we truly did â€Å"grow up†? I like to think that we would still be together. She would probably have stopped hiding my keys and phone unless I had done something really bad. My friends would eventually have come to like her after they got to know her. Perhaps though, we would have broken up. How the future would have been if she were still alive is unknown, but the future did not play out as I wanted it to. I never did have to listen to my friends’ gossip about her again; instead all I heard were their grievances: â€Å"I’m so sorry for your loss, be strong.† She really did help me â€Å"grow up.† I realized that I did not know what the future had in store and just how short life could be. All I could do was spend the time that I had letting the people I loved know how much I cared for them, in spite of their faults. The following Sunday, I placed my keys on her casket and wished her goodbye. Months have passed but, every now and then, when I misplace something, for just a second, I smile and I think to myself, she’s at it again.
